7 Household Filters to Clean or Replace

Housekeeping Reminders

Your home has several filters that are easy to forget to clean or replace. At Feels Better Maid Service, we’d like to remind you to check these often-overlooked filters.

Vacuum Filters

A vacuum that isn’t performing like it used to—or that leaves behind unpleasant odors—often has a dirty, dust-clogged filter. Most modern vacuums use HEPA filters, designed to trap up to 99.97% of airborne particles and pollutants. When these filters become clogged, both suction power and air quality can suffer.

At Feels Better Maid Service, we take priority to regularly wash and replace our vacuums filters. Take a moment to check your vacuum’s filter—replacing them when needed can make a noticeable difference in cleaning performance and indoor air quality.

Some vacuums use one filter, while others rely on multiple filters.

Refrigerator Water Filter

We often open our refrigerators without thinking about the water filter. For refrigerators that dispense water, regularly replacing the filter ensures you and your household enjoy clean, fresh-tasting water.

Be sure to follow your refrigerator brand’s recommended replacement schedule to keep your water tasting its best.

Some water-dispensing refrigerators have a light that indicates when the filter needs replacing.

Range Hood Filters

Many range hood filters go months—or even years—without cleaning. Cooking with oils and fats can quickly clog them, slowing airflow and leaving your kitchen greasy. Filters with light to moderate grease buildup can usually be cleaned. However, if the buildup is heavy, replacing the filter is often your best option.

At Feels Better Maid Service, we make sure these filters are cleaned as part of our kitchen deep cleaning.

Dishwasher Filter

Smelly dishwasher or slow draining water? A dirty filter is often to blame. These filters trap food particles and debris during each wash—but over time, buildup can cause odors, reduce cleaning efficiency, and even promote bacterial growth.

In most cases, these filters don’t need to be replaced—just giving them a thorough cleaning can keep your dishwasher smelling fresh and running efficiently.

Dryer Lint Filter

We use our dryers all the time, and the lint filter can quickly get clogged. Cleaning it regularly isn’t just about performance—it helps prevent overheating, reduces fire risk, shortens drying time, and extends the life of your dryer.

These filters typically don’t need to be replaced—just a good, thorough cleaning can keep your dryer performing at its best.

HVAC Air Filter

Have you ever looked up at your air conditioning vents? Many of our clients notice heavy dust buildup for the first time when we point it out during a walkthrough. At Feels Better Maid Service, our cleaning includes removing dust from the exterior of your vents, but the air filters themselves usually need to be replaced to ensure clean, healthy airflow throughout your home.

Air Purifier Filter

Many of our clients—especially those with allergies or indoor pets—use air purifiers to reduce dust, allergens, pet dander, odors, and other pollutants in their homes. These devices make a noticeable difference, but they also require regular maintenance.

Some filters can be washed, while others must be replaced—keeping a spare on hand ensures you’re ready when needed.
